Synchronous Motors

AC synchronous motors are widely used in applications where a precise number of movements are required in a predefined time frame, along with a relatively low torque demand - an analogue clock is perhaps one of the best examples of this, as well as turntables and HVAC actuators applications.

The rotation speed of a synchronous motor is dictated by the AC supply frequency and the number of motor poles. As supply frequency is typically very stable, whilst the voltage itself will fluctuate slightly, locking the speed to the frequency results in an extremely solid motor output rpm which can then be stepped down via a gearbox to suit application requirements.

Motors are available as either single direction, or bi-directional – with the direction being controlled by switching in an integrated capacitor.
