AC Motors and Gear Motors

Considered the workhorse of motor technology the AC motor is available in many different guises, as a motor only or with a multitude of gear box options. Either single phase for relatively simple on/off operation, through to 3 phase inverter controlled gear motors with high torque and accurate speed holding, the AC motor is stalwart of engineering. At OEM we offer AC motors from under 3W to over 1KW of output power. Compact, quiet, high IP rating, powerful, accurate speed holding, high efficiency and many other features are available from our AC range. <strong>Common applications:</strong> <ul><li>Conveyor system - simple power fed conveyors - just to move at a set speed. <li>Rotating an object - turn it on, it spins. Effective use of an AC gear motor. <li>Continuous running high torque demand at start-up - any application that needs up to and over 3x nominal torque can be driven by an inverter driven motor.</li></ul>

Brushless Motors and Gear Motors

Commonly used where accurate control is required over speed and position, brushless motors (also known as BLDC, ECM motors or Electronically Commutated) have a multitude of options to suit most applications. With no mechanical brushes to wear they offer long life and can give great torque and speed performance when compared with similar physical size AC and induction motors. Available with or without internal control and offering many gearbox options, there is a good chance we can help with your requirements. <strong>Common applications:</strong> <ul><li>Labelling machinery - motor required to change speed quickly and accurately. <li>Long multiple motor conveyor system - motors with integrated drive and BUS system to cut down on factory cabling. <li>Continuous feed single conveyor in wet area - Low voltage brushless DC used for speed control and longevity. <li>Repeatable pre-set indexing system - motor and drive programmed to index accurately on a single input pulse. <li>Down sizing from full servo system to drastically reduce set-up and programming time.</li></ul>

DC Motors and Gear Motors

DC motors are generally thought of for mobile applications or where low voltage is required for safety requirements. They can also excel in other areas of machine design thanks to ever increasing performance and control options from the likes of our Electromen DC motor drives. Brush wear used to be a big problem for DC motors when used in continuous duty applications, and although we generally advise using brushless or other motor technologies for high duties, longer brush life is possible in high quality motors like those offered from Crouzets DC Mind programme. With many gearbox options or motor only, OEM have a large selection as can be seen below. <strong>Common applications:</strong> <ul><li>Pump drive on portable machines - battery powered and high start torque. <li>Food machinery &ndash; low voltage to comply with HSE rules. <li>Low duty machine requiring high start torque - DC motors produce up to 3x nominal torque at start</li></ul>

Motor Drives

The word 'drive', when used in the context of electric motors is often only associated with servo, brushless or stepper motors and these tend to be seen as relatively complex devices. In many applications, a much more straightforward, programmable, and yet still versatile, drive and motor combination will often better suit the needs of the task. Speed, position, and torque can all be controlled with relatively simple drives offering repeatable indexing, accurate speed holding, torque limiting and other more advanced features. These are often alongside an integrated multi I/O board for logic control and signalling to other external devices. The standard brushed DC motor drive cards from Electromen offer control of speed, direction, current, and position - they are flexible, easy to use, cost effective and even the entry level models provide resettable over-current protection which can avoid incurring unnecessary service calls to reset trips. We also stock intelligent drives from Technosoft - these are highly customisable stand-alone motion controllers for precise dynamic control of all motor types. The control characteristics can be loaded into the microcontroller software on the device and facilitate 'distributed intelligence' within a more advanced control system. Other drives from OEM are available from Minimotor, Crouzet and Panasonic to suit various other types of motors and applications. <strong>Common applications:</strong> <ul><li>Brushed DC motor control - basic over current trip to full speed, direction, and current protection. <li>Conveyors - speed control easily adjusted with potentiometer or remote input. <li>Indexing machines - move a set distance every time a signal is given. <li>Linear actuator drive - Protect the motor against running into a dead stop. <li>Lifting platforms - synchronise two DC gear motors to stop crabbing motion.</li></ul>

Ball Screws and Ball Splines

Ball screws and ball splines are generally required to move an object horizontally or vertically whilst achieving a high positional accuracy and a rigid slop free movement. A Ball Screw is a high-efficiency feed screw with balls making a rolling motion between the screw axis and the nut. Compared with a conventional moving nut on a thread, the ball screw reduces the power needed to drive an object up to 70%, making it most suitable for multiple installations where motor power is kept to a minimum. A ball spline is a non-driven support bearing, keeping an object in line and allowing minimal movement in any direction other than that of travel. These are generally used in conjunction with a ball screw that provides the movement. <strong>Common applications:</strong> <ul><li>X/Y/Z tables - high speed and accurate positioning for precise control. <li>Special purpose machine builds - high speed and accurate positioning for precise control. <li>Multiple positional axis - power consumption considerably lower and life expectancy higher than simple travelling nut on a screwed rod. </li></ul>

Couplings

The coupling between motor / gear-motor output shaft and the product to be rotated is often overlooked. Many times, they are connected by a solid coupling with the belief that the rigid structure will then 'self-align' when mounted...Sometimes, this works. In some cases, the mounting surfaces are not perfectly machined, or the shafts not perfectly aligned. All may appear ok but the wear on bearings due to lack of compliance in the coupling can significantly reduce longevity and lead to premature failure, noise, vibration and a general perception of low quality for the overall product. Choosing the right coupling according to the installation requirements can solve all these problems. We offer a multitude of options and are happy to discuss your application to ensure the best connection is made. <strong>Common applications.</strong> <ul><li>Motor to pump connection - vibration and misalignment taken out by coupling. <li>Servo motor - maintain backlash free connection whilst reducing load on bearings. <li>Any motor or gear motor connection to a driven object can benefit from the correct choice of coupling.</li></ul>

Sitting between our standard, more common IP65 motors and fully waterproof stainless units, are epoxy coated IP67 worm and in line gear motors. Featuring 3 phase motor windings, they are totally enclosed with no fan for quiet and efficient running in harsher environments. Linear guides are the important bits that keep everything in line and the machine accuracy perfect. Be it a relatively simple slide runner or a fully rigid carbon linear guide with ball screw movement and servo motor positioning drive, correct choice of unit for the application is essential. Precision Gearboxes

Planetary gearboxes are widely used in industrial automation to provide desired output speed and torque to suit the application requirements. By design, they are compact and extremely efficient with drivetrain losses of well under 10%. The low inertia of the output shaft makes them ideally suited to dynamic applications. Our manufacturing partner, Siboni, offer a range of sizes from 34mm to 130mm, the largest size being rated to handle a nominal torque of well over 300Nm. A wide range of reduction ratios is offered from 3:1 to 400:1, with the higher ratios requiring multiple stages. In-line and right-angle drive options are available, depending on the space constraints of the application and the gearboxes can be mounted to most appropriately sized servo motors. The motor shaft is coupled to the gearbox by means of a bush with integral solar gear, this is typically held in place with a screw clamped collar.

Solenoids and Electromagnets

The humble solenoid coil is in its basic form a simple affair &ndash; yet through various design principles and ancillary components they can be adapted to perform many tasks. Reversible, latching, linear, bistable are all terms for solenoid design and performance characteristics. They can be used to simply operate a switch with an impulse of voltage and return when the voltage is removed, right through to 3 position twin coil solenoids used for positioning with detent (holding) force. Solenoids are also used in electromagnetic locks and security bolts. These can be power to lock or unlock and feature strong mounting options for security applications. A natural adoption of the technology is holding electromagnets. These are again designed on the solenoid principles and allow a magnet to hold a mass fastened, closed or indeed open with or without voltage as required. The many options from NAFSA can be found below, with typical applications being; <ul><li>Door locking and access control - electromagnet to hold door open or closed. <li>Food and medical machinery - solenoids as locking pins once a section is in place. <li>Factory automation - machine part holding electromagnets. <li>Vending machines - solenoids to open or lock access points, move vending flaps and guides. <li>Lifts and elevators - locking bolts as security and safety features. <li>Agricultural machinery - solenoid to open / close dispensing valves on casting machinery. <li>Automotive industry - multiple options for solenoid locks, holding magnets to lock doors.</li></ul>

Stepper Motors

Hybrid stepper motors are commonly perceived as voodoo by a lot of engineering designers. They are traditionally hard to select based on performance and a knowledge of how they work is essential to get the best performance out of a motor. Stepper motors are ideally suited to low speed high torque applications where using a gearbox is not a viable option. They can be used with a relatively simple drive as indexing positional motors- you give it a pulse, it moves a set number of degrees and stops. Multiple pulses, know as pulse trains are fed into the motor drive and it indexes round accordingly. If the motor meets a heavier load than it is designed for it will simply not move. Under most scenarios this will not damage the motor although it may 'squeal' a bit. Under no power, a stepper motor can have a good amount of holding torque so can be used to hold a load still removing the need for an external brake. This is also referred to as detent torque. If you want continuous motor revolution a stepper may not be correct and you could look to a brushless motor, but if you require simple indexing with minimal feedback, a stepper could be the way forward. The manufacturers of the Nema framed hybrid stepper motors we work with are based around volume production. Following a strict project plan and sampling, they expect volume orders of 100 pieces plus. Please have this in mind when looking to us for stepper motors. <strong>Common applications:</strong> <ul><li>Print head drive - fast accurate positioning back and forth. <li>Indexing machines - move a set distance every time a signal is given. <li>X-Y cutters and plotters - fast accurate positioning. <li>Rotating stages - motor indexes a known amount when given a pulse.</li></ul>
