How to select the right motor

Determining what motor to use is quite a daunting task. With a large crossover of performance characteristics over many different motor and gearbox types, choosing the most suitable option is not easy.

The below points are offered as a basic help guide to show the steps needed to determine the most suitable motor option for your application.

Alternatively, speak to our motors team here at OEM Automatic. With a combined 50+ years’ experience and knowledge of applications, products and industries, we can help and advise the correct choice for your needs.

A short discussion will allow us to make a quick suggestion based on your application, which can then be explored deeper if required. For the more commercially sensitive enquiries, we are happy to work under NDA conditions.

1. Understand Your Application Requirements

Start by gathering these key parameters:

  • Load type - constant, variable, shock
  • Required torque - starting, running, peak
  • Speed - (RPM) requirements
  • Duty cycle - continuous, intermittent, short-time
  • Power supply - voltage, phase, frequency
  • Environment - temperature, humidity, dust, explosion risk

2. Calculate load torque

  • Rotational load - Use the formula pictured
    • Where:
      • T = Torque in Nm
      • P = Power in kW
      • n = Speed in RPM
  • Linear Load - Convert linear force to torque using gear/pulley radius.

Also consider:

  • Inertia of the system (especially in accelerative/decelerative applications)
  • Any frictional or gravitational loads
torque calculation for motor. Torque = Px9550 / n

3. Match Speed and Torque with Motor Characteristics

Compare your required torque-speed profile to motor datasheets:

  • Synchronous or asynchronous motors?
  • AC or DC motor?
  • Brushed, brushless or stepper motor?
  • Controller required – basic, advanced or full motion control?
  • Gearmotor if high torque at low speed is needed.

4. Choose Based on Power Rating and Drive Characteristics required

  • Use calculated required power and apply a safety margin (typically 20–30%)
  • Pick a motor with rated power ≥ adjusted power
  • Check starting torque if the load is hard to start (e.g., conveyors, crushers)
  • Determine control required for drive options

 5. Verify Duty Cycle and IP rating needed

Match your application's duty cycle to the motor’s rated duty class (S1 to S9 per IEC 60034-1), and establish IP rating required.

  • S1 = Continuous duty
  • S2 = Short time
  • S3–S9 = Intermittent or variable duty
  • IP00 to IP68 – Where will the motor be located – do you need to consider environmental conditions?
