DC Motors

Motors without gearboxes are available for customer specific applications, where a standard gearbox is not required or suitable. DC motors are generally 12, 24 or 48Vdc and offer inherently high levels of starting torque, they can be controlled and driven through PWM drives for speed, torque, direction and positional control. Our Electromen range of Brushed DC Motor Drives offer many flexible and cost effective options with respect to this.

In line gear-boxes generally feature planetary or spur gear. Planetary offer central drive and spur gear-boxes generally have the output shaft off centre to allow for the gear interaction. Both have their uses. Planetary is normally the most eficient and delivers the largest torque for a given size, where as spur gear-boxes are slightly less efficient and usually quieter by design.

Right angle gearboxes allow for compact overall machine packaging, with some featuring a hollow through shaft for ease of instalation and options for through shafts. Whilst usually quieter than other types of gearboxes, the right angle worm gear box is generally less efficient and requires more motor power for a given torque in comparison with in-line gearboxes. It is also not always a given that right angle gearboxes will have full self locking without power. The brushed DC motors in this section include an integrated drive with communication using CANopen (CiA301 / CiA302), for this reason they are well suited to deployment in vehicle applications. Right angle gearboxes allow for compact overall machine packaging and simplified installation. Typically quieter than other types of gearboxes, they are however less efficient and require more motor power for a given torque in comparison with in-line gearbox types. It is also not always a given that right angle gearboxes will have full self locking without power.
