Hinge Switches
The HMS Z and HS Z hinge safety interlock switches from IDEM Safety are rugged, compact solutions designed to monitor the position of hinged machine guards, integrating the sensing function directly into the hinge axis. Both models are part of IDEM’s Z-Range, delivering high-performance safety interlocking with OSSD (Output Signal Switching Device) outputs. The HMS Z features a mirror-polished die-cast housing (IP67), while the HS Z is made from 316 stainless steel (IP69K), ideal for harsh or hygienic environments like food and pharmaceutical processing. These switches offer two OSSD safety outputs and a diagnostic auxiliary output, supporting series wiring of up to 30 devices without compromising safety integrity (PLe/CAT4/SIL3). The factory-set actuation point is approximately 3°, adjustable up to 12°, allowing early detection of guard movement. Their mechanically coded cam system and 800 N axial load capacity make them tamper-resistant and durable under continuous mechanical stress.
These switches are ideal for applications requiring both physical hinge support and safety interlock functionality, particularly in compact spaces or environments requiring hygienic washdown. The HMS Z suits general industrial machinery in packaging, logistics, and automation, while the HS Z excels in hygiene-critical areas, resisting corrosion, chemical exposure, and high-pressure cleaning. The concealed mounting style eliminates the need for separate actuator arms or external brackets, simplifying installation and reducing potential contamination points. Diagnostic feedback via LED status indicators and OSSD fault detection supports easy integration with safety relays and PLCs, streamlining maintenance and boosting system uptime. These switches are especially beneficial for hinged access doors, hatches, and swing gates where traditional tongue or RFID-coded systems may be impractical.
